How 100 rejections led to 300,000 people

Hi Reader, -- David here from SketchLikeAnArchitect.com

I’m writing this on my way to London for the ATN Influence Day. A conference bringing together some of the most popular architecture influencers. A full day of talks, panels, and meeting online friends in person.

And I’ll be honest. I still can’t believe I get to do this.
(I’ll be sharing my experience on Instagram Stories over the weekend)

A few years ago, I was sending out job applications in Copenhagen, Denmark. Over 100 rejections. No network. No Danish. Just a sketchbook, a laptop, and a stubborn belief that sketching still matters.

Now I’m heading to meet people I’ve admired online for years. People who share the same mission: helping others think visually and communicate ideas with confidence.

It’s a pinch-me moment. And it got me reflecting.

We recently crossed 300,000 followers on Instagram.

That’s a big number. But it’s not about the number.

It’s about what it represents.

It means 300,000 people who believe sketching is worth learning. Who picked up a pen, opened Procreate, or pulled out a sketchbook and decided to try.

Some of you have been here since the early days. Some found me last week. Either way, thank you. You’re part of this.

I started Sketch Like an Architect because I kept seeing the same gap everywhere. In university. In studios. In design offices.

Sketching was expected. But it was never taught.

And that gap creates frustration, self-doubt, and missed opportunities for people whose ideas deserve to be seen.

So I built something to close it.

Step by step. One line at a time.

3 books. 15,000+ students. Courses, workshops, live events, two global online summits. And now a community of 300K strong.

But the messages that keep me going aren’t about milestones.

They’re from the student who got into architecture school because of a stronger portfolio. The designer who now sketches confidently in client meetings. The hobbyist who picked up a pen again at 67 and filled her first sketchbook.

That’s the stuff that matters.

So wherever you are in your sketching journey, whether you’re just starting or you’ve been drawing for decades, know this:

You belong here. And your next confident sketch is closer than you think ✏️

Thank you for being part of this.

Happy sketching,

David Drazil, MSc.

PS. One more thing before I hop off the train. Next Thursday, March 26, I’m hosting a 90-minute LIVE workshop on Drawing People in Perspective. It’s designed to help you add believable, well-scaled figures to your sketches without needing advanced figure drawing skills.

$27 USD a ticket. You get a lifetime replay and a PDF handout.

It’s almost full. 26 spots left as of today.

Hi Reader, -- David here from SketchLikeAnArchitect.com Being a professional over-thinker, I have a love-hate relationship with this time of the year. Review - reflect - plan - prioritize - be grateful - scratch that new idea - doubt yourself - burn everything down? - start all over - “don’t forget to get some rest, too” - and repeat… Do YOU do yearly recaps? Looking back, reflecting, seeing what went well and what not so much? If you have any favourite process, tool, or resource for such...
